Mark Kelly: American Politician, Former Astronaut, and U.S. Senator

Early Life and Education

Mark Edward Kelly was born on February 21, 1964, in Orange, New Jersey. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1986 with a Bachelor of Science in Systems Engineering. Kelly later earned a Master of Science in Aeronautical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1994.

Astronaut Career

Kelly was selected as an astronaut by NASA in 1996. He completed four spaceflight missions, including three space shuttle missions to the International Space Station (ISS). In 2010-2011, he spent a record-breaking 340 days in space aboard the ISS as Commander of Expedition 26/27.

Political Career

After retiring from NASA in 2011, Kelly entered politics. In 2020, he was elected as the junior United States Senator from Arizona, defeating the incumbent Republican Martha McSally. Kelly is a member of the Democratic Party.

Personal Life

Kelly is married to former Arizona Congresswoman Gabby Giffords. They have two children. Kelly is an avid runner and has completed multiple marathons, including the Boston Marathon.
